Featured Website of the Month (April): Typing Games from www.freetypinggame.net

When I was in elementary school one of my favorite activities to do when I got home from school was to go on the computer and play typing games (we weren't allowed to play video games which I am very thankful for today!). I would take this one-minute timed test to see how many words per minute I could type with 100% accuracy. I think my highest score was 60wpm. This really helped me develop my typing skills. I told my husband about this and he thought it'd be fun to challenge me and see how many words per minute he could type so we headed over to www.freetypinggame.net and took the one-minute typing test (on our anniversary might I add - yes we were that nerdy:) I was excited to type 72 words per minute with 100% accuracy but of course he beat me and typed 104 words per minute (I didn't even know it was possible to type that fast!). So the only "game" I can beat him at is still Boggle, ha ha! ANYWAYS! This website is a lot of fun! My 4th graders loved playing the games like Meteor Blast and Desert Racing. They also had fun seeing how many words per minute they could type on the typing tests. We kept track of our WPMs (on a nice little chart you can find in my TpT store) and set goals for the future.

Typing is a great skill to learn and so necessary in today's world that it is good to start at a young age (just not too young!). I'd encourage typing games over video games any day! By the way, at a teacher's conference I attended once the speaker presented findings from a study done on the brains of students who played violent video games vs. those that played other types of video games vs. those that did not play video games. The area of the brain that houses aggression was much larger and more developed in the students who played the violent video games and less in the ones that played other video games and not near as much in the ones who did not play them. Guess you might expect that but still...NOT good! My kid's will not be playing video games period! I told that to my 4th graders once and they said they were glad I wasn't their mom! Ha Ha!

Enough about that! To check out this fun website go to http://www.freetypinggame.net
